War crimes probe report on Jamaat submitted

Tuesday, 25 March 2014

The investigation agency of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday submitted its report on Jamaat-e-Islami's role as a political party during Bangladesh's independence struggle over four decades ago. Investigation Officer (IO) Matiur Rahman handed over the probe report to the prosecution in the morning. The investigation agency took 219 days to finish its probe into the role of Jamaat during the war of independence and prepared the 373-page report. Abdul Hannan Khan, coordinator of the investigation agency constituted by the ICT, disclosed the probe body's findings at a press briefing in the morning. On August 18 last year, the investigation agency filed a complaint against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for its complicity in crimes against humanity and role as an organisation during the country’s Liberation War in 1971. Jamaat was banned just after the independence on December 16, 1971, but was later allowed to return to politics when the ban on religion-based politics was lifted, according to a news agency.
