The city's vendors selling warm clothes and electric room heaters have been doing a brisk business for the past few days with the sharp fall in day/night temperature.
Sources said their sales have sharply risen during the time and vendors have increased the prices of the winter clothes taking the advantage of the rush of buyers.
Sources said each footpath vendor is selling on an average Tk 20,000 a day against Tk 7,000 to Tk 8,000 few days earlier.
"Our sales of blankets have increased tremendously. We're selling on an average 100 to 150 pieces of blankets each day," Md Shajahan, owner of Munsiganj Store at Banga Bazar told the FE.
Vendors said people are buying all kinds of winter clothes, including jumpers, sweaters, pullovers, blazers, mufflers and jackets.
Each warm clothe was priced between Tk 200 and Tk 500 depending on the quality of the product.
Each jumper is being sold between Tk 250 and Tk 350, blazers between Tk 300 and Tk 500, jackets between Tk 300 and Tk 500 each.
Sales of electric heaters used to warm rooms also picked up, sources at the Stadium Market said.
Md Afzal, a salesman at Brahamanbaria Electronics said: "We're selling a good number of heaters each day," saying people buy heaters during cold waves.
However, a heater made in Malaysia or China is being sold between Tk 1,500 and Tk 2,200 depending on the size, volt and brand.
Monirul Hoque, a footpath vendor near Baitul Mukarram said he expects the cold wave to continue and boost further the sales of warm clothes.
However, met office said the cold spell is likely to lift from today (Tuesday).
The lowest temperature recorded in the city on Monday was 11.0 Celsius and highest 16.1 Celsius on the day.
