Warm clothes vendors doing brisk business

City's footpath vendors selling warm clothes have been doing brisk business over the past two days with the fall of temperature.
Other shopping places, including city's Banga Bazar, are also doing a good business due to rush of people for winter clothing.
Each vendor at city's different areas is now selling warm clothes worth Tk 25000 a day on an average against Tk 6000-Tk 7000 a fortnight ago.
"Yes, we are doing good business over the past two days, people from all section of the society have been buying every kind of warm clothing with the sudden fall of temperature," said Abdullah, a vendor at the city's Shapla Square told the FE Wednesday.
Vendors are selling jumpers, jackets, sweaters, blankets, blazers, wrappers, muffler, caps and all kinds of warm clothes for kids.
They said prices of all warm knitted clothing are higher this year hurting the small income group.
Vendors are selling a jumper at Tk 300, blanket at Tk 400, Blazer at Tk 300.
They said the prices are higher because of supply shortfall.
Tazul Islam, a vendor near the Baitul Mukarrom National Mosque said he expects the cold wave to continue to boost his sale of warm clothes.
"I have sold warm clothes worth Tk 40,000 today, I want to invest more if the cold wave persists some more days," Tazul added.
Shakil, an official working in an insurance company at Paltan area, told the FE that the prices of warm-knitted clothing is higher despite the fact that prices of all such items dropped over the past few months.
"I would like to buy a blazer, but vendors are asking Tk 300 for one. I had bought similar type of blazer lat year at Tk 200," Shakil added.
Razia, a school teacher, told the FE at Bangha Bazar the prices of clothes for kids are also high this year.
"I want to buy a jumper for my baby, but a vendor wants Tk 200," she added.
However, met official said the cold wave will continue over the next two days.
The temperature at Dhaka on Wednesday was recorded at 16.5 Celsius and the lowest temperature was recorded at Srimongal at 12.5 Celsius on the day.
