Warns govt against protest bar, terms charges against Tarique false

Wednesday, 7 July 2010

Senior BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan has warned the government against stopping the opposition holding human-chain protest.
He made the statement Tuesday ahead of BNP's human-chain programme scheduled for today (Wednesday), reports bdnews24.com.
"The government will be responsible for any untoward incident if it hinders our peaceful programme," Mr Khan told a press briefing at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office.
The largest party in the opposition announced the programme demanding the release of all leaders, including standing committee member Mirza Abbas, vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and lawmaker Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, arrested during the June 27 hartal.
"We hope the government will not hinder the programme," the standing committee member said.
Mr Khan said the human chain would be formed for one hour from 11am at all divisional and district headquarters.
The central programme will be held in Dhaka from Gabtali to Jatrabari, he said.
Mr Khan also announced a protest rally at Muktangan on July 10, demanding information on ward commissioner Chowdhury Alam who had been missing for several days.
The BNP has been alleging that plainclothes intelligence men whisked him away from Farmgate in the capital on June 26.
Mr Khan said, "We believe Chowdhury Alam has been either detained or something has been done to him, which is not being disclosed."
He demanded that Mr Alam be produced before the court immediately.
Mr Khan alleged the government has pressed charges against Tarique Rahman in a 'false case' to keep him off politics.
He made the statement shortly after the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) filed charge-sheet against BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman and his friend-cum-business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun in a money laundering case.
"The charges are false," Mr Khan said.
He said the 'illegal' caretaker government in its 2007-08 tenure failed to press any charges against Mr Tarique.
"The government is pressing the false charges against him to prevent him from returning home."
Mr Tarique, the elder son of BNP Chairperson and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia, is currently in London for medical treatment on bail from the Supreme Court.
In a press briefing at the BNP chief's Gulahan office, Mr Khan said that lawyers would do the needful about the 'false' charge-sheet.
