WASA in troubled waters for failing to supply pure water

Monday, 15 March 2010

Dhaka WASA gets into troubled waters for failing to supply pure drinking water to the city-dwellers, as the High Court (HC) hears today (Monday) a writ petition against the government utility agency, reports UNB.
A division bench comprising Justice M Momtazuddin Ahmed and Justice Naima Haider fixed Monday for the hearing on the matter as the counsel for Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) mentioned the petition Sunday.
The HR watchdog went to law seeking direction upon WASA to ensure "pure and germfree" drinking water supply to the residents of the capital city, in the wake of reports about dirty and stinking water coming out from its supply lines.
The rights watchdog filed the writ petition in the form of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and made the LGRD secretary, the managing director of WASA, the chairman of Science Laboratory, the chairman of WASA and the Mayor of Dhaka as respondents in the case.
Counsel for PIL petitioner Manzill Murshid told the court Sunday that "health and life of city-dwellers became threatened following the supply of contaminated water by the WASA despite complaints time and again".
