Washington-Tehran relations

Tuesday, 31 March 2009

Obama's overture to Iran to normalise relations with America is a very positive development. It has been nearly thirty years since the two countries snapped diplomatic ties. Ever since, Iran has been on the hit list of all US presidents none so more than Junior Bush. The party that has been pouring oil on the matter was of course the rogue state of Israel.
Now that the Americans have realised that something needs to be done about the relation between the two countries, let us hope the agenda is real and it will be taken forward without interference from others.
The Iranians have rightly reacted cautiously. They, like most of us, know that America's word cannot be taken seriously. The original inhabitants of the land who were wrongly dubbed 'Indians' know only too well that these people cannot be trusted and called them 'those who speak with forked tongues' like that of snakes (why the poor snake is thought of as being untrustworthy is not known)!
The US has done murderous mischief in Iran. The CIA assassinated the Iranian PM and put an end to democracy there half a century ago and installed the puppet Reza Shah on the seat of power. The rest is history.
The Israelis of course influence almost everything in America and certainly US-Middle East policy. Let us hope they don't scuttle Obama's mission.
