Water bus service around city likely to start from July

Tuesday, 12 January 2010

FE Report
Water bus service around the capital is likely to start from July in a bid to reduce traffic congestion on the streets.
"We hope four water buses will run on Ashulia-Sadarghat route under the circular waterway project," Shipping Minister, Shahjahan Khan said. The government has initiated the project to ease pressure of traffic jam on the road which is deteriorating day by day, he told the FE.
The water buses which will be newly built, will run on diesel and every bus have the capacity of holding 30-35 passengers, he added.
"There has been primary discussion regarding the design of the water buses," Lutfur Rahman, director (Commerce) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) said.
Talking to the FE, he said the new water buses will be fuel efficient. Internationally recognised shipbuilding company will be given priority for building the new water vehicles.
The earlier octane water taxi, which was made in 2005, would not be used for transportation as much fuel would be needed to run it.
