Sunday, 22 July 2007

COMILLA, July 21 (UNB): Water level in the Gomoti River increased alarmingly due to heavy rainfall, triggered by an onset of monsoon for the last two days, and onrush of hilly waters.
Water Development Board sources said the river was flowing 32 cm above the danger level at about 8:00 am Saturday.
Standing crops are being damaged in the district due to heavy rainfall in last two days until Saturday.
Meanwhile, many low-lying areas went under water causing suffering to a large number of people.
Another report from Bogra adds: Over 0.1 million people of the district are in great anxiety after 90 metres of a spur, constructed to protect erosion of the River Jamuna at Shaharabari were damaged threatening the local flood control dam.
Sources said the 727-metre spur was constructed at Shaharabari under Dhunot Upazila at a cost of Tk 100 million in 2002.
About Tk 50 million has so far been spent for repairing the spur but the dam is being damaged by erosion every year.
The erosion, that already damaged the spur and shortened it to 320 metres, damaged more 90 metres early Thursday. The joint forces are packing the place with GO bags to combat the erosion.
The erosion has created a panic created among the people of Goshaibari, Bhandarbari and Chikashi unions.
