Water level in river Brahmaputra falls drastically

GAIBANDHA, Jan 16 (BSS): Water level of the river Brahmaputra in the district and adjacent parts has fallen sharply with the beginning of the dry season posing a threat to fisheries, agriculture and forestry.
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources said that a large number of dunes and chars had emerged on the riverbeds due to decline in the water level.
The erosion by the river had intensified and many arable lands were going to the riverbed creating untold sufferings of the erosion victims, they said.
People living beside on the Brahmaputra river said that during the last four months there had been an abnormal fall in the water level of the river Brahmaputra.
They are now apprehending that within a month or two there would be little water left in the river Brahmaputra.
BWDB officials in Gaibandha said that the water level of the river started to fall from mid September.
They also said that the water level in the river Brahmaputra might fall further during the current dry season.
Due to a drastic fall in the water level, the plying of water vessels had been suspended on all the routes of the Brahmaputra.
Vast tracts of land remain unutilised on the beds of the river and they cannot be brought under cultivation programme for want of water in the river.
Hundreds of people living in the chars have become totally jobless and are passing their days hardship.
