Water-logging - a curse for Dhakaites
Thursday, 2 July 2015
Dhaka is a mega city which accommodates almost 12 million people. It is true that Dhaka city's drainage and sewerage system are not efficient at all to cater to the requirement of such a big city. Some parts of Dhaka are not well designed and those are the areas that suffer most due to lack of drainage facilities. Rainy days are otherwise delightful for the poets, but it is a nightmare for Dhaka city and its people. Due to unplanned drainage system, water logging takes its worst shape during the rainy season, as rain water does not find a way out. Broken and dilapidated roads further aggravate the situation of waterlogging in the city. Vehicles get stuck in water on roads making communication difficult and time consuming. The streets become hell for the pedestrians. This condition sometimes leads to severe accidents. This water spreads germs and diseases also and impacts public health.
It is tough to live in a big city like Dhaka with the existing drainage system. If city corporations, RAJUK and other authorities concerned do not pay due attention to a problem like waterlogging immediately, the situation is going to worsen further in the days ahead.
