Water-logging in Shantinagar

Saturday, 23 June 2007

I live in the capital's Shantinagar area. This area experiences water logging even after a little rainfall. Every year, the authorities concerned carry some development works of the drainage system. They dig the roads and the lanes in and around the area for placing big pipes inside. These pipes are so placed for either improving gas supply or the sewerage. But we do not see any change in the waterlogging situation in the locality year after year.
Shantinagar is an important area for living. The population of this area is on the increase. The increase can be visualized from the growth of high-rise buildings. Hardly any apartment is found vacant in this locality for a month. There is high demand among people for accommodation in the area. It may be due to its proximity to the commercial hubs of Motijheel and Dilkhusa.
Yet it seems that we cannot expect an immediate solution to the waterlogging problem of the locality. There is no realistic development programme for improving the drainage system of the area considering growth of its population and buildings. No half-hearted development activity can solve the problem of water logging. There is a need to take a concerted plan for timely implementation of a better drainage system in the area.
