Furniture manufacturers at Mirpur area have sought government support for bank loans and other infrastructure facilities to give the industry a further boost.
"Mirpur furniture market has 150-200 showrooms. But it has been suffering from water logging for years," Abdul Awal, vice president of Bangladesh Furniture Industry Owners' Association (BFIOA), said Saturday.
The market is situated on both sides of Rokeya Sarani Road and this road goes under water if rains last for half an hour, he said.
He was speaking at a discussion meeting on "Potential of Furniture Industry and Infrastructural Problems" held in the city.
Bazlul Karim, general secretary of the association, said traffic congestion on Bijoy Sarani also hampers the business.
He said that the government should address the problems of water logging and traffic logjam to save the country's largest furniture market, which provides employment for more than 0.15 million people in Mirpur.
Chinese furniture is now being exported all over the world due to the state support, he said, adding Bangladeshi furniture makers can also earn foreign currency through exporting quality furniture.
