Water management training begins at BRRI

A three-day training programme on 'integrated field water management' for field-level officers of different organisations began at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Sunday in Gazipur.
BRRI organised the programme in collaboration with International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).
BRRI Director General Md Nur-E-Elahi was present in the inaugural programme as the chief guest, while IRRI Representative in Bangladesh M Zainul Abedin and IRRI Liaison Scientist MA Hamid Miah were present as the special guests.
BRRI Director (Admin) BAA Mustari and heads of research divisions of the institute were present, among others, on the occasion.
BRRI Head of Irrigation and Water Management Division MA Sattar said Bangladesh can cut almost half of its irrigation costs by adopting integrated field water management techniques including 'Alternative Wetting and Drying' method in rice cultivation.
He also mentioned that China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and India have already applied the method successfully in their rice fields that save a lot of fuel, water and labour as well as money.
A total of 30 officials from different government and non-government organisations including IRRI, BRRI, BADC, BARD, DAE, BMDA, BRAC, CEGIS and FoSHol participated in the training programme.
