Water rationing adopted for Teesta project canals

NILPHAMARI, Mar 5: The district administration decided to introduce rationing and alternation of water flow of the Teesta Barrage Irrigation Project through its different canals stretching across Nilphamari district to mitigate the water crisis of farmers.
The decision was taken in an emergency meeting held recently at the conference room of Deputy Commissioner Rashedul Hasan under his chairmanship attended by the concerned departmental heads.
Department of Agriculture Extension sources said that out of the total targeted 79,163 hectares of land for IRRI, Boro cultivation in this season, the irrigation canals would provide water to nearly 15,000 hectares of land in this district.
Water shortage and fall in water level situation has arisen in the peak season of IRRI, Boro cultivation due to unilateral withdrawal of water in the river Teesta at its upstream by India.
The deputy commissioner told this correspondent that constant monitoring is going on about the irrigation situation in the canal areas and water rationing has been proved successful.
