Water shortage in N'ganj jail

NARAYANGANJ, Nov 3 (UNB): Water shortage in the district jail has been causing untold sufferings to about 2,000 prisoners and staff.
Sources said the deep tubewell of the jail went out of order Thursday plunging the jail inmates and staff into great trouble.
Jail inmates alleged that development activities, including modernising the only deep tubewell and upgrading of water supply system, have been hampered since last year due to the negligence of the PWD officials.
Jailer Nur Nabi said PWD officials are yet to float tender for development works, including installing deep tubewell, inside jail though Tk 4.0 million has been allocated again in the current fiscal year.
About 700 officers and employees of the jail and their family members, who were living on jail compound, are also suffering badly due to the water shortage.
Deputy Commissioner AMA Rahman expressed his dissatisfaction seeing the condition in the jail and asked the officials concerned to take immediate measures in this regard.
