Water spinach growers make good profit

BOGURA, June 20: Water spinach (Kolmi shak) cultivators of the district are happy over the good market price.
Hundreds of grassroots peasants of the district have cultivated the leafy vegetable on a vast tract of land this season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) both the farmers and the department officials have taken elaborate programme to make the cultivation programme a success.
Water spinach farming is gaining popularity among the growers in the area.
Each kg of the vegetable is being sold at Tk 15 to Tk 25 in the retail market while the wholesale rate Tk 8.0 to Tk 10.
"I have cultivated water spinach on five decimals of land spending Tk 1,000 this season," said farmer Akram Hossain of Shibganj upazila.
"I have already sold some three maunds of vegetable at Tk 2,400 and expecting to make a profit of Tk 5,000 more," the grower added.
To produce a kg of water spinach a farmer needs to invest Tk 5.0 to Tk 10 and sells them at Tk 15 to Tk 25.
Organic fartiliser is more popular in growing the vegetable.
