BRAHMANBARIA, Dec 4: Water vessels are facing huge problems, as they cannot ply smoothly on the Titas river as its bed has been silted up. Trade and commerce in the area are, thus, being disturbed greatly, sources said.
Important bazars and commercial centres of the district including Ananda Bazar are located on both the sides of the river. River is the main means of transport of commercial goods in the area.
But recently the riverbed has been filled up. The Titas, one of the main rivers in the district, has become narrow and it has lost its depth. So, the water vessels like the boats and launches cannot move in the river freely.
Other marketplaces are at Medda, Majlishpur, Shahbazpur, Chandura, Satbarga, Horinbair, Gokarna Ghat, Nurpur, Nasirnagar, Akhaura, Champak-nagar, Monipur, Kuti Bazar and Nabinagar also depend on waterway communication.
According to the sources, waterway is the main means of carrying goods in big boats, launches and trawlers that used to ply along the river and people from different parts of the district used to come to the district town by the river to run their business and other activities.
A lot of fishermen and boatmen used to earn their livelihood by fishing and rowing in the Titas. But recently the riverbed has dried up. People now can cross the river on foot. It is gradually becoming stagnant.
Finding no alternative, many fishermen are leaving their age-old profession and are switching to others. Most of them are now working as day-labourers.
