WB MD arrives in city

The Managing Director (MD) of the World Bank (WB) Ms Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala arrived in Dhaka Sunday afternoon on a four-day visit.
Okonjo-Iweala will meet with government officials, civil society, the private sector and development partners to discuss the Bank's development programme, climate change, good governance, and economic growth, said a WB press release.
She will visit cyclone affected areas in Kalapara upazilla, meet with slum dwellers in Dhaka, travel to Jamuna Bridge, and visit a community nutrition centre and village in Jamalpur that are benefiting from the Bank-financed Social Investment Programme Project (SIPP).
During her visit Okonjo-Iweala will meet with the Finance Advisor, as well as other government officials to discuss the bank's on-going work programme.
She will also discuss a long-term framework for natural disaster risk management for Bangladesh, the power situation, and private sector development.
In addition she will address the bank's ongoing programme of support to improve governance, strengthen institutions of accountability and reduce corruption in Bangladesh.
The MD will discuss WB support to the government's floods and cyclone restoration and medium to long-term recovery programme.
The WB has responded, in cooperation with development partners, to help address cyclone and flood related needs.
