Thursday, 12 March 2009

The government has successfully concluded negotiations with the World Bank for a US$62.20 million Clean Air and Sustainable Environment (CASE) project aimed at helping the capital out of environmental degradation, reports UNB.

An official release says CASE is an innovatively designed project that aims at integrating environment and transport concerns towards a common objective of improving Dhaka's air quality.

Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Additional Secretary of Economic Relations Division (ERD) under Finance Ministry, and Maria Sarraf,

Sr Environment Economist of the World Bank, led the government and the donor sides respectively at the negotiations concluded Monday.

The transport component will focus on low-cost measures to reduce conflict between motorised and non-motorised transport, reduce congestion and provide safer and cleaner mobility for those who walk and use public transport in Dhaka.

"It would also finance the preparation of a public bus rapid transit study in Dhaka," said the World Bank release.
