WB to raise aid, help build Padma Bridge

World Bank (WB) would increase its assistance to Bangladesh and help in construction of the Padma Bridge, which will connect the country's southern region with the rest of the country, reports BSS.

WB Vice-President for South Asia Region Isabel M Guerrero made the assurances when she called on Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina at her Jamuna residence Sunday morning.

During the meeting, Isabel greeted Sheikh Hasina for becoming the Prime Minister of Bangladesh after her party's massive victory in the December 29 general election.

The WB Vice-President conveyed her sympathy at the gruesome killing of the army officers at the BDR Headquarters, and also praised the Prime Minister for tackling the situation quickly in a peaceful manner.

Besides, in response to the Prime Minister call's, the WB Vice-President also assured her of providing cooperation in different sectors including social safety-net project, energy, education, river dredging and checking river erosion, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told reporters after the meeting.

Sheikh Hasina also requested the WB to cooperate Bangladesh in preparing its new budget. Isabel assured her of providing the WB cooperation in this regard. Earlier, the PM welcomed the WB Vice-President to Bangladesh.

Secretary of Prime Minister's Office Mollah Wahiduzzaman, Secretary of External Resources Division Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad and World Bank Country Director Xian Zhu were also present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister's Adviser Dr Toufique-e-Elahi Sunday sought financial assistance of the World Bank for rehabilitation of old power plants through short-term and long-term programmes and development of the renewable energy sector.

The adviser sought the assistance when Isabel Guerrero called on him at Bangladesh Secretariat. He also sought WB cooperation for enhancing efficiency in using and saving fuels through energy auditing.

Besides, various aspects of WB cooperation in the country's power and energy sector came up for the discussion during their meeting.

He requested the WB to adopt innovative financial policies to involve the private sector along with the public sector in constructing big power plants in view of the current economic recession.

He also sought cooperation for big solar energy projects, generation of electricity with wind-propelled turbines, and enhancing efficiency of BAPEX in exploration of natural gas. The WB Vice-President also gave assurances of cooperation in all these sectors.
