WDB identifies 62-km of dam in coastal belt vulnerable

KHULNA, Jun 23: Water Development Board (WDB) has identified 62 kilometres of the dam in three coastal districts as risky in the rainy season. The board also submitted a proposal to higher authority seeking Tk 16 crore for maintenance of the dams on emergency basis. Meanwhile the feasibility study has been completed, but the authority has not released fund till today. For this reason the people of the coastal area are passing days in anxiety.
WDB Khulna Circle source said that a total 1,588-kilometre dam is in 16 Upazilas of Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts under this circle and these dams save the people of the area from tidal wave and flood. But in the rainy season the dams become weak. The risky points were identified before the rainy season.
Source said that Executive Engineers of 4 divisions under Khulna circle of WDB identified 62-kilometre of dams of the coastal area vulnerable. Of them 9.29-kilometre out of 318-kilometre of Bagerhat division, 18.77-km out of 337-km of Satkhira-1, 24-km out of 422 km of Satkhira-2 and 10-km out of 511 km of Khulna-2 and Tk 159.7 million has been requisitioned for maintenance the above dams.
Superintendent Engineer of WDB Khulna circle Abdul Latif Mia said that a committee has been formed headed by Engineer Abdul Mannan. The members have visited the affected areas of Bagerhat division and other divisions would also be visited in phases. He said that the maintenance work will start after releasing of the fund.
Tree fair inaugurated
Another report says: A fortnight long tree plantation campaign and tree fair-2012 has started at City's Shahid Hadis Park on Friday. Khulna district administration, Sundarbans west zone and Agriculture Extention Department jointly arranged the fair as part of a countrywide programme.
Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque formally inaugurated the fair as chief guest. The inaugural function presided over by Deputy Commissioner, also convener of the tree fair organising committee, Mesbah Uddin. The function was attended among others by Advocate Shorab Ali Sana MP, Conservator of forest of Khulna Region Akbar Hossain, Deputy Director of AED Abdul Aziz, Additional SP Imamur Rashid, and DFO Zahir Uddin Ahmed.
The city Mayor distributed cheques among 15 victimised families affected by tiger attacks in Sundarbans.
