Leader of the opposition in Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) Raushan Ershad has said her party wants to play the due role of the opposition, but maintaining cooperation with the government. “Never in the past, the opposition (in Bangladesh’s parliament) cooperated with the government, but we would like to do that.” However, Raushan, the wife of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, said when they (the opposition bench members) cooperate with the Treasury bench members, the Opposition party is suspected.” She made the remarks with an apparent aim to silence critics who claim that Jatiya Party has been an opposition loyal to the ruling party. Stating that the government and the opposition are complementary to each other, Raushan said “We want to create a history.” Pointing at the main opposition party in the last (9th parliament) JS, Raushan said they (BNP) were always absent in the house. “Now when we’re in the House, we’re called that we’re not the opposition. We want to show we’re a real opposition for strengthening democracy,” she told the House. Raushon said they would never boycott Parliament, hurl abuses at others and engage in mudslinging in the House. She said the people of the country now want to get rid of unhealthy politics and the politics of vengeance, according to a news agency.
