We want unity of BNP to win next polls: Bhuiyan

Saturday, 6 October 2007

BNP rebel leader Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan Friday said corruption cannot be rooted out through jail or repression only, it needs social movement to do it, reports UNB.
Talking to reporters at his Gulshan residence, he said a corruption-free society would have to be built through institutionalisation of democracy and good governance.
Replying to a question, Bhuiyan said they want both unity and reforms of the BNP so that the party can be more acceptable and stronger.
"We want unity of the party since we want to win the next election, which is coming closer," he said.
About his reform proposals, Bhuiyan said those are not final, as the council would finalise reform proposals. "We want to hold the council unitedly and we will ensure all can take part in it."
He said it is also imperative to bring about reforms in the state machinery to establish good governance and rule of law as well as to enhance the image of the country.
Asked about the case against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, Bhuiyan said the case is pending before the High Court and declined to comment since the matter is sub-judice. "What I expect (is) she gets justice."
Asked if he will be willing to sit with BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain for talks on unity, he said it needs unity of politics, not unity of personality to resolve the problems.
