We will accept any decision of Khaleda: Hafiz

Thursday, 1 November 2007

Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, acting secretary general of BNP, Wednesday said they would accept any decision to be given by party chairperson Khaleda Zia on her release, reports UNB.
"We're workers of Khaleda Zia. Our new committee is not a challenge to any one. Whatever decision she'll give after her release from jail, we'll accept that," he told reporters at his Banani house.
Asked if Khaleda from jail dismisses new committee headed by Saifur Rahman as acting chairman, Hafiz said, "We hope she'll accept it since the standing committee has approved us."
Referring to Khondoker Delwar Hossain's appointment as secretary general, he said Khaleda can give appointment, but it was not approved by the standing committee. "I'm the acting secretary general since the standing committee has approved me."
Hafiz said since the chairperson is in jail, she cannot convene the standing committee meeting, which is supposed to be held every month.
He said it is not correct that the standing committee cannot hold meeting without Khaleda and take any decision in the changed situation under the state of emergency. In support of his contention, he referred to section 12 (b) of the BNP constitution.
Hafiz said if there is any competent leader for the post of the secretary general, he will stand aside.
He said they would send a letter to the Election Commission and let them inform about the BNP standing committee's decision. "We're the main BNP and we hope we'll receive the invitation letter for dialogue with the Commission."
Hafiz demanded reopening of BNP's central office at Naya Paltan kept shut following disputes between two factions of the party.
Referring to Awami League leadership's comment on events in BNP as "midnight coup", he did not mention the name of Awami League but advised them to look at themselves.
Hafiz said at this moment unity is essential in BNP and expressed the hope that Khaleda will be released soon.
The BNP leader expressed sorrow for the arrest of Khaleda saying that it is unfortunate that a political personality has to stay in jail.
He prayed for early recovery of Khondoker Delwar and standing committee member Matin Chowdhury.
Hafiz told reporters that he would go to BIRDEM to see Delwar whom he described as his leader and a senior leader of BNP.
