Weak EC and disappointed people
Tuesday, 4 March 2014
The present Election Commission (EC) has proved to be an ineffective and weak organisation which is not good for our democracy. The EC seems to be reluctant to play a strong, independent role, and time and again its actions have proved it. It is the constitutional duty of the EC to hold a free and fair election. But the commission has lost much of its credibility through its controversial and ineffective role during the January 5 elections and the recent upazila elections. Recent violence and death during the upazila elections testify to this.
The EC is not sincerely working for holding free and fair election despite getting a convenient atmosphere. We should not forget that the EC is an independent constitutional body that operates the legal and administrative functions of holding election in our country. We cannot expect democracy to flourish here without the EC's strong role. The EC has to play a vital role for establishing good governance in our country. The common people of our country look up to the EC and expect it to strengthen the democratic process so that they can cast their votes freely and choose their leaders who will ensure accountability and transparency.
