KUSHTIA, Oct 18: A group of weavers burnt yarn in protest against the price hike in the district Sunday.
Sources said the weavers of handloom industries at Maddha Lahini Para (Middle Lahini Para) under Kushtia sadar Upazilla have been leading miserable life. At least 50 to 60 families depend on this profession. Due to abnormal price hike of yarn they cannot keep up with the reality.
According to them the price of a bale of yarn was at Tk 36000, it has now gone up to Tk 80000. As the price increased beyond their capacity they have become earnable to continue their profession. They took a decision collectively to give up this profession if price do not come down.
They make articles locally known as lungi, gamcha, and different kinds of yarn related products. Since price is now very high they have stopped making the products. They are involved in this profession since their childhood.
