Week’s data indicate pandemic downtrend

Downward trend in major indicators of Covid-19 pandemic continued in the country, as the number of tests, infections, recoveries and deaths showed a sharp decline last week that ended on September 19.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the number of tests, infections, recoveries and fatalities dropped by 3.41 per cent, 9.22 per cent, 21.08 per cent and 17.25 per cent respectively than that of the previous week that expired on September 12.
In the 37th epidemiological week (from September 06 to September 12) since the detection of first coronavirus case in the country on March 08, some 12,479 people were tested positive from 97,523 tested samples.
During the seven days, some 20,419 people cured from the deadly viral disease, while 255 others died.
In the following or 38th epidemiological week (from September 13 to September 19), the number of tests, infections, recoveries and deaths came down to 94,198, 11,328, 16,115 and 211 respectively.
However, a total of 1,544 people were tested Covid-19 positive, while 26 others died of the respiratory disease caused by the new virus in the last 24 hours until Sunday noon.
On Sunday's daily health bulletin on coronavirus, the DGHS said a total of 11,591 samples were tested across the country since Saturday noon.
Of the tests, some 1,544 samples were found Covid-19 positive along with 26 more deaths recorded across the country during the period, it mentioned.
"With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 348,916 and 4,939 respectively," noted the bulletin, signed by the DGHS additional director general (administration).
With the latest figure, the rates of infections and deaths stood at 19.16 per cent and 1.42 per cent respectively.
Of the total deaths, 49.06 per cent was recorded in Dhaka division, followed by Chattogram (20.77 per cent), Khulna (8.42 per cent), Rajshahi (6.68 per cent), Rangpur (4.70 per cent), Sylhet (4.47 per cent), Barishal (3.73 per cent), and Mymensingh (2.17 per cent)
At the same time, the DGHS data also mentioned that 2,179 patients recovered, taking the entire tally of recovery to 256,565.
Globally, over 31.0 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus, and 961,818 have died until Sunday 5:30 pm, according to Worldometer info.
