Former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar broke down in the dock when magistrate Quamrunnahar Tuesday ordered him to the central jail on a 30 day detention after rejecting his bail petition, reports UNB.
An iron man who was once controlling police and paramilitary forces during the BNP regime Babar apparently felt hapless. At one stage he started crying like a baby in the courtroom.
His wife and a sister were present when Babar was produced before the court in the afternoon at the end of three days remand.
The police investigator in his report to the court said Babar has provided significant information and clues during the total 11 days remand, which required to be verified. Therefore, he should be detained in jail under the Special Powers Act.
Pleading for bail his counsel submitted that Babar has been suffering from asthma and gastric ulcer.
Rejecting the bail petition, the court ordered for his proper medical treatment in accordance with the jail code.
Joint forces arrested Babar from his Gulshan residence on May 28 and recovered four firearms and huge ammunition.
In police remand Babar has revealed incidents of heavy corruption of BNP leaders evoking surprise among the people.
Controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun, a close associate of Tarique Rahman, was also ordered to the central jail when produced before the same court at the end of 3-day remand in an extortion case.
Mamun is accused in 15 cases of extortion, illegal possession of arms and corruption. Now undergoing trial in special courts in Jatiya Sangsad premises he has confessed to the police of his guilt in seven cases.
