West Zone railway undertakes uplift projects of Tk 13.34b

RAJSHAHI, Aug 11 (BSS): The West Zone of the Bangladesh Railway has undertaken various railway modernisation and rehabilitation projects involving around Tk 13.34 billion (1,334.42 crore) for a significant change in the region's railway communication.
Additional Chief Engineer (Track) Mozammel Haque said that these projects would be implemented within the next three years to ensure safe and comfortable journey for the passengers.
"Under these projects, the existing 139 kilometres Parbatipur- Panchagarh and Kanchan-Birol metre gauge railway track will be developed as duel gauge while the 9 kilometres Birol-Birol border metre gauge line will be turned into broad gauge at a cost of Tk 9.81 billion, he said.
On successful completion of these two projects, Engr Mozammel Haque said people of Dinajpur, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Panchagarh, Thakurgaon and Kurigram districts would enjoy safe and comfortable railway journey.
He also said these projects also include modernisation of Syedpur Railway Workshop at an estimated cost of Tk 1.22 billion to help enhance working capacity of its labourers and employees.
In addition to rehabilitation of 200 metre gauge and 60 broad gauge bogies, two high-powered relief trains would be procured by spending Tk 2.44 billion for further strengthening the rescue process of accident-hit trains side by side with making the trains more effective in carrying increased number of passengers.
Engr Mozammel Haque said that the present government had approved another project to supply and install load monitoring device on both sides of the Bangabandhu Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge. The government has also adopted a plan for constructing the Trans- Asian railway line in the country, he said.
He also said that the Rajshahi, Khulna, Natore and Shantahar stations have been brought under the computerised ticket-selling system and effective step has been undertaken to bring 29 more stations under the modern system soon.
On successful implementation of these projects, he added, the railway lines and other infrastructures would be able to attract more passengers and businessmen towards the railway service to contribute a lot in improving the socio-economic condition of the region.
