
Western Marine to build dredger, workboat

CHITTAGONG, Oct 3: The Western Marine Shipyard laid a keel to build the workboat and cutter suction dredger at the Mongla Port today, authority said.
The 11.95 metre long workboat will act as an ancillary facility for the cutter suction dredger with 14 metre dredging depth. The dredger will be jointly built by the shipyard and the world renowned Holland-based dredger manufacturer IHC Merwede under the supervision of the Bureau Veritas and Germanscher Lloyd.
To this effect an agreement was signed by MPA and the IHC WMShL Ltd. Chairman of Mongla Port commodore MAK Azad inaugurated the keel laying as chief guest at WMS shipyard at Patiya today.
The Mongla Port chairman said quality ships built by the local shipbuilders for the foreign ship owners will brighten our image overseas.
WMS chairman Saiful Islam said Bangladesh is going to build a dredger for the first time. Being a nation of rivers Bangladesh will acquire more dredgers in the future to maintain a certain level of depth in the riverways for navigation.
Bangladesh has recently taken initiatives to dredge the port channels in order to enable the larger vessels to use the sea ports.
