United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has provided unconditional mobile phone cash transfers to assist people whose homes and livelihoods were severely affected by the devastating floods in the northwest of Bangladesh in August last. WFP has reached nearly 19,500 ultra-poor households – almost 100,000 people who have been hit hard by flooding, said a press release issued on Thursday. Each family is provided with unconditional cash transfers of 9,000 Tk (US$116) divided into three rounds of Tk 3,000, thanks to a donation of US$2.6 million from the United Kingdom (DFID), and a contribution of US$527,009 from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO), according to UNB.
