What choice the people have?

Friday, 12 December 2008

BANGLADESH'S first Nobel laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus, emphasised how important it is for Bangladeshis to nominate honest and competent candidates for election to parliament. Otherwise, as he underlined , it would be business as usual with good governance and the well-being of countrymen remaining elusive.
It would be the triumph of the people when they not only win their right to franchise in a free and fair polls but also are assured that they would be casting their votes for reasonably clean and competent representatives. Free and fair elections, not be an end in itself, must lead to election of representatives with integrity and competence to work for the public good .
That is why the people are asking why some individuals with questionable records were being allowed to contest the upcoming national elections. Election of questionable elements can defeat the very objective of democracy.
