What does BD need to do to qualify for Super 8 round?

Wednesday, 12 June 2024

South Africa beat Bangladesh in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 edition at the Nassau County Stadium, on Monday in New York.
Notably, the game turned out to be an absolute humdinger as the Proteas narrowly edged out the Bangladesh by just four runs to become the first team to qualify for the Super 8s round of the mega ICC cricket event, report agencies.
As per the standings of the teams in Group D, with this win South Africa have picked six points (+0.603 NRR) and have become the first team to qualify for the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024.
They recorded their third victory of the group by defeating Bangladesh by four runs in New York. Now to qualify for the next round, Bangladesh (+0.075 NRR) will need to beat both Nepal and Netherlands to ensure they finish just behind South Africa in the points tally.
As for Bangladesh, this was their second game of the tournament. Having won their first match against Sri Lanka, the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side suffered their first defeat.
This was a heart-breaking defeat for them, as they came very close to beating South Africa for the first time in men's T20Is. However, the Proteas will now continue their perfect record of 9-0 against the Bangladesh in the shortest format.
If Bangladesh, who have two points in two games, win their remaining two matches, they will reach six points and qualify for the Super 8 round.
If they win one out of two matches, they will reach four points and then they would have to hope that the Netherlands earn a maximum of two points in their remaining two encounters.
There is a chance that both Bangladesh and Netherlands finish the group with four points and then it would come down to net run rate. Sri Lanka are also in the fray. They can win their next two matches against Netherlands and Nepal, but need big wins to boost their net run rate.
