What the Imam did!
Monday, 21 July 2014
The smuggling of gold into Bangladesh has increased and almost everyday the media carry news items of gold haul in different airports of the country. Needless to say, those caught are far fewer than the successful attempts of the smugglers. Yesterday's operation where an imam of a mosque was arrested at the airport Saturday morning with 18 smuggled gold bars and $18,240 in his possession, concerns us more.
Where lies our moral values? The police are involved in killing, bank officials are defalcating public money, and finally a mosque imam is involved in smuggling, that too the mosque of a government organization. The offender Aslam Sheikh is an employee of the Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh. It is learnt that the imam admitted that he was carrying the smuggled gold bars for someone else, but he owned the US dollars. Media report suggested a section of officials and employees at the airports are allegedly involved in the smuggling, and this time an imam.
