What’s in a table many may ask! When Sheikh Hasina attends a meeting at the defence ministry around a table which her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman used to hold for cabinet meets, the answer is legacy. The Prime Minister held a meeting with senior officials of the defence ministry she held at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday. During his stint Bangabandhu used this office to run his government – and the table he used for Cabinet meetings, remains in the defence ministry. Defence Secretary Habibul Awal told the Prime Minister her father used to hold cabinet meetings in what is now the conference room of the defence ministry. The table Sheikh Hasina used on Sunday had been used for cabinet meetings by her father, he said. Bangabandhu used the office from January 12, 1972, two days after returning home from Pakistan following Bangladesh’s independence. It was used as the office of the head of the government even after the introduction of presidential system. The office was preserved after the Awami League government took office in 1996. The Prime Minister also visited Bangabandhu’s room on Sunday, according to bdnews24.com.
