Wheat cultivation on rise in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Mar 17: Farmers have cultivated wheat to a great extent in the district this season as both the demand and price of the staple have increased amid the skyrocketing hike in the prices of essential commodities.
Due to good weather, farmers have got a bumper wheat production this year compared to last years'.
According to the Directorate of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Gaibandha, 3,307 hectares of land has been cultivated this season in this district - 117 hectares more than last year's.
Some 137 hectares has been brought under wheat cultivation in Sadar Upazila, 248 hectares in Phulchari Upazila, 438 hectares in Saghata Upazila, 300 hectares in Sadullapur Upazila, 250 hectares in Palashbari Upazila, 1,154 hectares in Sundarganj Upazila and 780 hectares in Gobindganj Upazila.
Tipu Sultan, a farmer of Goailbari village of Sadar upazila, said, "We've got a good yield of wheat. We hope to get its good price this year."
Another farmer, Abdul Wazed Mondal, said he has cultivated wheat this year as its price is high and its cultivation cost is less than that of paddy.
Gaibandha DAE Deputy Director Md Khorshed Alam said that this current season wheat has been cultivated on 3,307 hectares of land in the district.
Due to a good demand and fair price of wheat last year, many farmers have leaned towards wheat cultivation this season.
As the weather condition is favourable for wheat cultivation, a bumper harvest is expected this season.
