Where are the civic services for Dhaka's new city wards?

Sunday, 19 March 2023

A total of 36 new wards, 18 each under the Dhaka south and north city corporations, were created in 2017. However, six years after their inclusion, the residents of these new wards are not getting necessary civic services, including birth registration, trade licensing, playgrounds, drainage, mosquito control, waste management and graveyards. They often complain that nothing has changed in the areas. And they struggle to get even the most basic civic amenities although they pay holding taxes regularly to the city corporation authorities.
The residents are also reported to be suffering from water stagnation, mosquito menace, poor waste management and bad roads. The two city corporations have not also been able to ensure other civic amenities such as playgrounds, community centres and parks. We urge the authorities concerned to look into this and do the needful so that no one feels discriminated in Dhaka city.
