Where the caretaker govt. deserves full credit
Tuesday, 30 December 2008
We have a tendency to destroy our previous achievements when a new government comes to power. It is true, everything the outgoing caretaker government did was not good, but it deserves credit for some of the work. It made the country's first ever computerised voters' list with photographs. The digital electoral scroll eliminated ghost voters. The Washington-based International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), tasked by the UN to monitor the elections said that the list was compiled with "a high degree of accuracy."
Still many people try to point out flaws in it. But it helped us get an acceptable voter list eliminating 12.7 million fake voters.
It would be easier now to update it by enlisting new voters and removing anomalies, if any, from time to time. The next government should not abandon the list with a faulty list for its political gains.
