White Panel sweeps in DU dean polls

BNP-Jamaat-backed White Panel swept the Dhaka University (DU) dean elections for 10 faculties, reports BSS.
The election was held at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) cafeteria on the campus, which began at 9:00 am and ended at 1:00 pm.
DU Treasurer Prof Syed Abul Kalam Azad conducted the polls as the election commissioner.
Out of ten, White Panel won deans of eight faculties, including Arts Faculty, Science Faculty, Biological Science Faculty, Pharmacy Faculty, Business Studies Faculty, Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty, Engineering and Technology Faculty and Law Faculty and pro-Awami League and Left leaning parties 'Blue Panel' won two deans -- Social Science Faculty and Fine Arts Faculty.
Arts Faculty incumbent Dean Dr Sadrul Amin of White Panel was elected securing 116 votes and his rival Prof Fakhrul Alam of Blue Panel got 107 votes.
Social Science Faculty incumbent Dean Prof Harun-or-Rashid of Blue Panel was elected securing 100 votes while his rival Prof Ferdous Hossain of White Panel got 53 votes.
Dr Tazmeri SA Islam, incumbent Dean of the Science Faculty of White Panel was elected securing 67 votes while his rival Prof Muhibur Rahman of Blue Panel got 47.
Dr Abul Bashar of White Panel was elected dean of the Biological Science Faculty securing 83 votes and his rival Prof Anwar Hossain of Blue Panel got 61.
Dr Abbas Ali Khan was elected dean of the Business Studies Faculty securing 65 votes from White Panel while his rival Prof Mizanur Rahman of Blue Panel got 53 votes.
Dr Mohammd Abdur Rashid of White Panel was elected dean of Pharmacy Faculty securing 30 votes while Prof Farida Begum of Blue Panel got six votes.
Prof Borhan Uddin Khan of White Panel has already been declared elected as Dean of Law Faculty as no other nomination papers have been filed for the post.
The newly elected deans will take over charge by the end of this week, DU sources said.
