Whither democracy!
Friday, 8 May 2015
Democracy is a continuous process of establishing overall human rights, particularly the basic rights. It is led by peoples' choice, but people of this country could not establish it. Mere casting vote in an election does not mean that we are practising democracy. Democracy is a mega canvas on which merely poll results are not drawn, but a landscape of peoples' rights and privileges are also depicted. In Bangladesh the awareness of the citizens of their rights is questionable. They are generally unaware of their rights.
We could not cultivate democratic values in our country since our independence. Political instability, economic deprivation and social indiscipline are the stumbling blocks on way to our democratic life, like any other Third World nation. Consequently it is difficult for democracy to thrive here.
However, the ruling party, the opposition party as well as other parties should be more conscious of their duties to and responsibilities for the nation. All parties, either in power or in the opposition, should demonstrate their maturity in a democratic manner. Democracy is confined here to the pages of our constitution only. We must try and make it a part of our everyday life. Hello Mr. Democracy, we are waiting for you. Are you listening?
