Why beat up Dr Anu Mahmud and others?
Wednesday, 9 September 2009
The police assault on Dr Anu Mahmud and the others, who in a procession, were proceeding to gherao Petrobangla was a high handed action by the government. Equally ridiculous was the subsequent apology to the professor and all those who were badly injured. Why did the police act in this way? Surely they knew the participants in the procession. Even the female participants were mercilessly beaten up.
Does this mean that this government has something to hide about the identities of those who have given the lease of Block 11 and the terms and conditions? It would be sensible for the government to at least know what Dr Anu Mahmud and the others who were with him, had to say. They are neither mad people nor the congenital troublemakers.
If they have raised some serious points about the natural resources which belongs to the country and not some individuals, there must be a national debate and the government must answer on the issues. The violence by police was totally uncalled for.
