Why no stimulus for the RMG sector?
Thursday, 23 April 2009
LAST Sunday the government announced a stimulus package of Taka 34.24 billion (3,424 crore) to offset the possible impact of global economic recession. Out of this, the share of agriculture is 43 per cent, power, 18 per cent, agriculture loan (recapitalisation), 15 per cent, exports, 13 per cent and social security (food), 11 per cent.
This package is for the last three months of the outgoing fiscal year. There is no allocation for the garments sector.
It is difficult to understand why there is no allocation for the readymade garments (RMG) sector, though it has been demanding it for quite some time.
