Why two-month probe into stock debacle?
Saturday, 12 March 2011
A committee has been formed to find out the reasons behind the recent debacles in the stock market. The committee has been given two months time to investigate. This time frame sounds to be too long. The following are the reasons why the probe committee needs unnecessary long time to investigate the stock market debacle:
Firstly, the committee members do not have first hand knowledge as to how the market operates. The committee chairman himself admitted it in a write-up published in a local Bangla daily. Surely, as they are not involved in the stock trading, they do not know the market behaviour. So, before starting the real investigation, they are now in the learning process. This will need some time. Learning the complex mechanism of stock market operation definitely needs some time for those who never operated in a market like that.
Next, most of the committee members are elderly persons who might not have direct access to computer or other modern equipment. So they are dependent on others to go to different documents most of which are preserved in computers.
Thirdly, the prime minister has already indicated that people belonging to the opposition political parties are involved in the stock market debacle. So in a way the probe committee has to take into consideration the Prime Minister's observation during the inquiry process. In doing so, the committee will have to see first if anybody other than members of the opposition parties are found responsible. If any member of the ruling party comes in the list, the committee has to innovate strategy as to how to exclude them from the list of the offenders.
And finally, the probe committee chairman is a supporter of the ruling party. So he is likely to safeguard interest of the party he belongs to. Otherwise, the very purpose of making him chairman will be frustrated.
The probe committee chairman in a TV interview gave much information on the stock debacle. It seemed he knew many things before hand. Still they need such a long time! So to me the above may be the reasons for taking so long a time.
