A spate of robberies and burglaries in the city have been reported in newspapers recently. Meanwhile, newspapers have also reported about crime points in the city where people are snatched at night and in the early morning hours. The snatchers probably take advantage of the time when the spots get desolate. The snatchers often indulge in mass snatching of cash and other valuables from the unsuspecting passers-by. They cordon off the road sections to rob departing and arriving passengers.
People who have to pass by these spots, complained to police stations about their experience without any remedy. The police also ignored their requests to arrange patrolling of the spots.
Among the trouble spots, Gopibag, Mouchak, Shishu Park area, Tejgaon GMG Road, Kataban, Rokeya Sarani, Kalyanpur Bus Stand, Postogola and Sayeedabad have become the snatchers' paradise.
The home ministry needs to wake up to activate the law enforcement agencies. The city residents as well as the visitors feel deep disappointment at the indifference of the authorities. A fitting response would be to increase police patrol of the spots. Round-the-clock police presence could also improve the situation. But the police needs better training and motivation to control crime. Police must know the whereabouts of the snatchers and other offenders. Surprise raids of the hideouts to arrest the offenders would curb such crimes.
The extortionists and other criminals seem to have revived their city networks. The authorities can ill afford to it let worse. The police and RAB should be reactivated to eradicate the crimes. The government owes it to the people to improve the law and order sooner rather than later.
