FE Report | Tuesday, 29 July 2008
Technology experts on Monday expressed their optimism that the number of internet subscribers in Bangladesh will reach up to five million by the year 2012 through mobile WiMAX broadband penetration.
Talking to newsmen at the first WiMAX Roadshow at a city hotel they said WiMAX would minimise the digital divide between rural and urban Bangladesh.
Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies organised the roadshow as Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory & Commission (BTRC) recently came up with a guideline for Broadband Wireless Access license in Bangladesh. Representatives of BTRC and other government organisations, mobile companies, internet service providers, and vendor companies were present at the roadshow.
It was inaugurated by Monowar Hussain, Managing Director of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited and also addressed by Khor Yew Shin, Director of Huawei's WiMAX department for South Pacific region.
The 2008 is a crucial year for WiMAX development, Huawei officials said adding that operators would have more options for creative and successful business models with large-scale commercial WiMAX applications.
Huawei official said their WiMAX compact solution delivers high speed, economical and stable internet services to subscribers via portable and mobile terminals. They claimed that small and light-weight WiMAX base stations would reduce cost and achieve fast networking. "Huawei believes that WiMAX will not only reduce the digital divide, but also enhance broadband data protection," said Khor Yew Shin.
Huawei officials said they have already set up more than 20 commercial contracts on WiMAX across the world and were expecting a good market in Bangladesh. "Our end-to-end WiMAX solutions will drastically reduce the capital expenditure of service provider," said an official.
