Winter veg cultivation going on in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Dec 31: Farmers of many areas in Rangpur district are getting financially solvent by growing different varieties of winter vegetables on their lands in recent years as the crops give them relatively more profit.
Harvesting of the winter vegetables is going on in full swing in the areas and growers are delighted as they are getting excellent yield as well as good price of their produces.
While visiting some areas this correspondent found the farmers busy taking care of their vegetable fields. Some were found harvesting their produce with much delight. The peasants are growing cabbage, chilli, cauliflower, gourd, bean, eggplant, cucumber, tomato, carrot, radish etc.
Akmal Hossain , a farmer of Helencha village under Mithapukur upazila, said he has cultivated cabbage on 30 decimals of land this season. He has earned Tk 22,000 by selling his produce and is optimistic about earning more profit during the remaining part of the season, he also said.
Bakkor Mia, another farmer of village Nazirdaho under Kawnia upazila said he has already earned Tk 25,000 by growing eggplants on 40 decimals of land and is hopeful of getting more profit from it.
"It was so tough for me to afford the expenses of my family by growing paddy only, but vegetable farming is now giving me adequate profit to ease my financial constraints" he further said.
Traders from across the country are purchasing the vegetables and transporting those to their respective areas, sources said.
Deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur, SM Ashraf Ali said the soil of many areas of the district is suitable for vegetable cultivation and so the farmers are showing more interest in cultivating winter vegetables on their lands.
DAE is also giving them necessary advices in this regard. This season the farmers are very much happy due to good yield and satisfactory price of their produces, he added.
