Withdraw emergency rule immediately: Zillur
Sunday, 27 July 2008
Bangladesh Awami League (AL) acting president Zillur Rahman Saturday demanded immediate withdrawal of the state of emergency, saying that it is no longer necessary, reports UNB.
Addressing an extended meeting of Awami Ainjibi Parishad at Supreme Court Bar auditorium, Zillur Rahman reiterated his call for holding Parliamentary elections before upazila polls.
Zillur's comment came amid similar calls by other major political parties, including the BNP, who want an immediate end to the state of emergency.
Presided over by Awami Ainjibi Parishad president Shahara Khatun the meeting was addressed, among others, by Syed Rezaur Rahman, M Enayetur Rahim, Nurul Islam Sujon, Abdullah Abu and Momtaz Uddin Mehedi.
About 500 representatives from district bars participated in the extended meeting.
The parties renewed their calls for the withdrawal of emergency rule, as Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed recently said time had not come yet for that.
The AL leaders, meanwhile, expressed deep concern at the rising food prices saying that there should be a limit to the price-spiral. "It seemed that no government exists in the country," he said.
Rebuking the caretaker government's inaction to assuage the plight of the people, he said this caretaker government could not do anything barring, arresting political leaders and filing false cases against them.
Zillur again demanded regular release of Sheikh Hasina and withdrawal of all cases against her.
