Withdraw emergency to remove doubts from voters' mind: Delwar

Thursday, 23 October 2008

BNP secretary general Khondoker Delwar Hossain Wednesday asked the caretaker government to withdraw the state of emergency to remove doubts from voters' mind about the fairness of the December 18 elections, reports UNB.
Khondoker Delwar said this when BNP leaders of Senbagh Upazila and Municipality of Noakhali district met at his NAM apartment in the city Wednesday.
BNP former lawmaker from Senbagh Upazila Joynal Abedin Faruq, who led the delegation, submitted an organisational report about his constituency to Delwar.
Delwar said BNP would not take part in the elections if the government does not accept their seven-point demand that includes the lifting of the emergency.
"Although we're forced to go for registration with the Election Commission, it would not be possible in the case of joining elections," he said.
Delwar alleged that the government has not yet created enabling condition for free and credible elections and people are in doubt as to whether the elections would be held at all.
He once again said BNP wants to participate in the elections but not in any 'election of entente'.
The BNP leader asked his party members to build up BNP from grassroots level. "We will have to work unitedly to protect democracy and the country's sovereignty," he said.
Later addressing a meeting of Demra thana BNP at Jatrabari Ideal High School, Delwar demanded release of party leaders, including Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Dr Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas and ex-MP Salahuddin Ahmed.
