Withdraw hartal: FBCCI
Monday, 3 November 2014
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) on Monday urged Jamaat-e-Islami to withdraw its fresh hartal called for Wednesday and Thursday. In a press release, the FBCCI said such recurrent hartals will create adverse impacts on the country’s economy. ‘Jamaat’s ongoing 72-hour hartal is disrupting civic life, production system, product supply and regular activities. New shutdown announced by Jamaat will adversely affect the country’s trade and business as well as the economy,’ it said. Jamaat called another 24-hour shutdown for Wednesday to protest Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the death penalty to the party’s assistant secretary general Muhammad Kamaruzzaman for war crimes. Earlier, the party called a 24-hour hartal for Thursday in protest against the death sentence of its policymaker Mir Quasem Ali for wartime offences, according to a news agency.
