Withdraw judicial power of Justice Shamsuddin Chy

Monday, 10 October 2011

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has urged the Chief Justice (CJ) to immediately withdraw judicial power of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and lodge allegation of "violating judges' code of conduct" against him before the Supreme Judicial Council for action, reports UNB. The decision came at an emergency general meeting of the association on Sunday, the reopening day of the apex court after a 44-day vacation, with its president Khandker Mahbub Hossain in the chair. If the demand is not fulfilled, the lawyers of the Bar would be compelled to go for a tough movement, said a resolution of the meeting. It said the SCBA feels that Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury has violated the judges' code of conduct by giving television interviews abroad saying that the death of advocate MU Ahmed was normal. On August 26, a hardcore BNP lawyer MU Ahmed (52), who was arrested over a chaotic incident that took place in the ejlash of a High Court bench on August 2, passed away at the city's Square Hospital. Advocate MU Ahmed died while undergoing treatment under police custody. His family accused the police of torturing him after the arrest that led to the death. Earlier, the SCBA, which is dominated by BNP-minded lawyers, had broken a long tradition of making courtesy call and exchanging pleasantries with the judges of the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice, on the reopening day Sunday after vacation as a mark of protest for "not taking any effective steps" about the death of Advocate MU Ahmed. In another resolution, the SCBA has decided to hold a condolence meeting in the capital with the members of the bars from across the country to pay respect to late Advocate MU Ahmed.
